The arrival of the Edutainer in Mshenguville
Edutainer press release

KDR Sports and Adventure Travel (Pty) Ltd and Soweto.co.za are happy to announce that thanks to the generous support from the Zoë Carss Education Trust and the Bright Kid Foundation, a fully equipped “Edutainer” was installed at the Siyakhuliswa crèche in Mshenguville-an informal settlement in Soweto on Wednesday 12th October 2005.
The Edutainer is a converted 12 m shipping container which has been custom converted to a pre-school classroom.

The teacher/manager is Lilian Nxumalo and the crèche accommodates 21 pre-school children at present.
With the new facilities up to 30 children can be accommodated.

As part of the sponsorship Lilian will receive further education which will equip her to conduct grade R classes.

Thanks to the support of a number of other donors and a contribution from our daily private and corporate tourists, the entire

A donated “Wendy” house has been converted into a toilet for the children who range in age from 2 to 6.  It is now a safe and pleasant environment.

The primary purpose of the crèche is to provide essential early childhood development for the children who otherwise live in a very poor environment with little appropriate stimulation.

Unfortunately most of the mothers are unemployed so www.soweto.co.za has initiated various small job creation projects in the area.  Our mission is to make this project somewhat more sustainable in The handover of the Edutainer to Denis Creighton, one of directors of KDR Sports and Adventure travel - The owners of Soweto.co.zathis regard.

The development of the Siyakhuliswa crèche and the other projects initiated in the area is an example of how tourism can directly and indirectly assist in the upliftment of a depressed area-“Development Tourism” in action.

Other projects which have been or will be shortly initiated in Mshenguville include sponsorship of the Mofolo Knights soccer club, assistance to HIV/AIDs patients, assistance to Cerebral palsied child, basic English courses and life skills for adults, physical education and ball skills and art for the older children, craft projects for both adults and children.

Dear Denis

Many thanks for your email and I am delighted that we have been able to direct an edutainer to the community of Mshenguville.  It is particularly rewarding to be able to help a community where the conditions are bad, and with a dedicated teacher who will now receive some formal training, I am sure it will make a big difference.

I look forwarding to visiting at some stage in the future, although I am not sure when I shall next be in Johannesburg.  I shall certainly make contact when this happens.

It was good to see the pictures of the occasion on the website, thank you for sending these details.

Kind regards

Richard Carss

Dear Mr. Carss,

On behald of the Mshenguville community of Soweto and in particular the children and parents of the Siyakhuliswa creche, I would like to thank you most sincerely for the most generous donation of an Edutainer to be used as a pre-school classroom.  The affected comminity lives in extremely poor conditions and the new facility will greatly assist in their preparation for school.  It will also enable more children to receive development.  There are always more children who would like to attend than are able to be accommodated.

Your bursary to enable the teacher Lilian Nxumalo to receive formal training will also enhance the quality of preparation and in particular for the grade "R" level.

I hope most sincerely that at some stage you will be able to visit us when it will be my great pleasure to take you to see what is being done in the area.

Please check out our website www.soweto.co.za where the announcement of Edutainer is presented.  After tomorrow we will post pictures of the memorable occasion.

Kind regards,

Denis Creighton.
